Am I allowed to use the Lee County dump?

No. As of October 2006, all residents of the City of Smiths Station must participate in the City’s Solid Waste Service. There are different options and exceptions for residents of mobile home parks and apartment complexes. The City provides quarterly dumpsters behind City Hall for citizens to use. Dates are provided on your solid waste bill.

How much is Solid Waste?

Solid Waste is $23.00 per month or $69.00 per quarter. Bills are sent out quarterly but payments can be made monthly, quarterly, or annually. Payments are late by the 15th of the month in which the bill is sent. There is a set-up fee of $30.00.

Who does the City contract with for Solid Waste?

Waste Management, Inc.

I need more than one solid waste can. How much does that cost?

Additional cans are $12 per month or $36 per quarter.

What day of the week is my trash picked up?

Solid waste is collected once per week per address. Contact the Environmental Department at 334-297-8771, Ext. 0 for your pickup day.

How do I dispose of yard debris, bulky items, furniture, appliances, etc.?

Yard debris must be placed right next to your solid waste can on your pickup day and must be no more than five feet long and 4 inches in diameter. Bulky items such as furniture should also be placed next to your solid waste can on your pickup day. The City will pick up these items. Waste Management will not pick up these items. Quarterly dumpsters are provided for this purpose as well. Dates of arrival will be printed on your solid waste bill. I have my own trash can? Can I use it along with my City issued can?

Privately owned cans are not serviced. Only trash placed in your green City issued can will be serviced.

Can I leave my can at the road at all times?

Cans must be rolled away and stored until trash pickup day.

Are there solid waste fee exemptions available for those on a limited income?

Applications are available at City Hall. You must meet the income guidelines specified on the application.

I am disabled and unable to roll my cart to the curb. What are my options?

Backdoor solid waste pickup is available if you are disabled. A physician statement declaring you as disabled must be provided. If there are others living in your household, they must also be disabled in order for you to qualify.

Are business owners required to have Solid Waste service?

City solid waste service is required for all residents and businesses within the corporate limits of the City of Smiths Station. There are additional requirements for business accounts. The option of contracting with an outside dumpster service is allowed. Please contact the Environmental Department at 334-297-8771, ext. 0 for more information.
