F.L. “Bubba” Copeland was named the second mayor of Smiths Station after defeating John “Buster” Bessant Tuesday night by more than a 2 to 1 margin.
“I’m relieved,” Copeland said while celebrating with supporters. “Going door to door and meeting with the people made a difference.”
In unofficial totals, Copeland received 569 votes to Bessant 206. He will fill the seat held by Mayor LaFaye Dellinger, who did not seek re-election and her term ends on Nov. 4.
Copeland, 42, touted his two terms on the Lee County Board of Education while Bessant, a businessman and member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission focused on his ability to look for opportunities for the growing city.
Copeland said the 15-year-old city is ready to blow up with growth in the years ahead. He said his trust among the voters was key in his victory. “People trust me to do a good job,” he said.
